You have to like Altman
The reviews are all over the place on this one. It really comes down to Robert Altman. You either love him or hate him. It has the pacing and cadence of MASH with the same long shots. No back and forth over the shoulder shots that most people are used to. That is part of the charm of this kind of film. Long shots that just let the actors act with out a lot of editing.

So Pointless
This film is an exercise in mediocrity. It is not often that I see such a brazen showcase of anti-thought, so I felt compelled to warn you beforehand if you checked comments before watching. I'd recommend passing on to your next selection, reading a good book, or thinking about something meaningful and interesting. All are preferable to trying to kid yourself into thinking this movie should be worthy of your time.

good stuff
Arjuna9, I think it's what they call a parody rather then a satire. ie: Casino Royal, Blazing Saddles, Naked Gun, etc., etc. They poke fun at previous films of a certain genre. Your comment "pretentious absurdity of it all" says it all and that's what makes it so amusing.

I loved it.
OK, so this is no normal movie. No action, no sex, no nudity, no plot. So what is there to love? The Characters! The costumes, the sets, the pretentious absurdity of it all. I suppose it could be called satire. The silliness of the show, the phoniness, the incompetence of the people who pretend to greatness. Contrast that with the simple reality of courage in the face of injustice (Chief Sitting Bull) There are a lot of great lines and subtle and not so subtle humor. My favorite line of the show is "Nostalgia ain't what it used to be"!
